Commissioner vacancy branded an affront to crime victims

The lack of a victims’ commissioner has created a “void” that is an “affront” to those directly suffering due to crime, the justice secretary has been told.

A group of campaigners – led by the Victim Support charity – has written an open letter to Alex Chalk, the justice secretary, to express “deep concern” that the post has been vacant for a year.

Writing on the anniversary of the departure from the role of Dame Vera Baird, the former Labour MP and solicitor-general, the letter notes there is “no indication a new appointment is imminent”.
