Picture a day like this review — George Benjamin’s cool and witty quest opera

★★★☆☆The “quest journey”, in which a protagonist embarks on a hunt for something that leads to encounters with numerous symbolic characters, is one of the most ubiquitous story-forms in mythology. A couple of those legends have been raided by the playwright Martin Crimp as the basis for the new opera he has written with the composer George Benjamin – given its UK premiere by the Royal Opera in this fluid, enigmatic staging by Daniel Jeanneteau and Marie-Christine Soma.
