Jill Dando ‘was victim of professional hit’, claims criminal worried for own safety

Noel ‘Razor’ Smith, an armed robber-turned-writer, said there are rumours in the criminal world that BBC Crimewatch host Jill Dando was the victim of ‘a professional hit’ in 1999

Jill Dando was killed in an underworld “professional hit” a former career criminal claims.

Noel “Razor” Smith, an armed robber-turned-writer, is interviewed in a three-part Netflix series about the 1999 murder of the much-loved BBC Crimewatch host. Smith was in HMP Belmarsh when Barry George, wrongly convicted of 37-year-old Dando’s murder in 2001, arrived after being charged. George was unanimously acquitted at a 2008 retrial.

Asked if he had any clues as to who killed Dando, Smith says: “I don’t really want to talk about that for my own safety. But there are rumours in the criminal world. It’s not who you would think and it’s not Barry George. It was a professional hit.”

Asked if he could give any insight into why she was shot, he replied: “No. If I tell you why, you’d know who did it.” George was jailed largely because of a particle of gunshot residue. It was so small it was not admissable at his retrial. He had lived close to Dando in Fulham, West London, who was shot on her doorstep.
