Strange case of the man dubbed ‘Papa Smurf’ who turned himself blue forever

A man who turned himself blue forever went on to earn the nickname ‘Papa Smurf’ before his death.

Paul Karason, from Washington, hit headlines across the globe in 2008 after he appeared with blue skin. He explained on the Today show that in an attempt to sort out several minor medical issues he was suffering with, including acid reflux and dermatitis, he started consuming silver chloride colloid – while also rubbing the solution on his face.

Karason claimed the cure worked, but it had one horrific and very visible side effect – turning his skin a silvery blue hue for the rest of his life. He claimed not to have even noticed the change until a friend pointed it out, telling hosts: “A friend that hadn’t seen me for a while came by and asked me what I’d done to myself.

During the chat, Karason also revealed some people had started calling him ‘Papa Smurf’, with his wife adding: “That was a nickname he didn’t appreciate, depending on who said it. If it was a kid who ran up to him saying ‘Papa Smurf’, it would put a smile on his face. But if it was an adult, well…”
