LIV Golf rebel Sergio Garcia saw a window of opportunity to force his way onto Luke Donald’s European team for the Ryder Cup in Rome next week, but it was quickly slammed closed
Sergio Garcia has spoken out after his last-ditch attempt to force his way into Europe’s Ryder Cup team was shut down.
The LIV Golf rebel is a legend of the tournament, winning more points than any other European player, but he will not be in the team that takes on the Americans at Marco Simone Golf & Country Club in Rome next week.
In joining the Saudi Arabia-backed breakaway league in 2022, Garcia lost his DP World Tour membership, which is a requirement for any player to represent Europe in the Ryder Cup. But the plates of the golfing world continue to shift at pace, with the PGA Tour and LIV’s backers deciding to join forces in recent months.
Details, though, remain distinctly unclear and the landscape of professional golf in the months and years ahead is decidedly unclear. But there has certainly been a softening in the anti-LIV rhetoric from golf’s leading powers and players.
