A prominent US senator was charged with bribery in a case in which he and his wife are accused of accepting luxury cars, cash and even gold bars from businessmen in his home state of New Jersey.
Robert Menendez, a 69-year-old Democrat, is accused by the US attorney’s office in Manhattan of accepting hundreds of thousands of dollars in cash and other gifts. Prosecutors say that in return, Menendez used his power and influence as a senator and as chairman of the committee on foreign relations to seek to protect and enrich three businessmen, and benefit the government of Egypt. The businessmen have also been charged in the case.
