Brazen Boris Johnson won’t be punished for latest ‘clear and unambiguous’ rule breach

The ex-PM sparked anger when he gave Parliament’s anti-corruption watchdog just half an hour’s notice that he’d started writing a weekly column for the Daily Mail

Boris Johnson won’t face any action despite committing a “clear and unambiguous” breach of rules for former ministers.

The brazen ex-PM sparked anger when he gave Parliament’s anti-corruption watchdog just half an hour’s notice that he’d started writing a weekly column for the Daily Mail. Under strict Parliamentary rules former ministers aren’t allowed to take up new appointments before receiving advice from the Advisory Committee on Business Appointments (Acoba).

Lord Pickles, who chairs the committee, said Mr Johnson had clearly flouted the rules. But Deputy Prime Minister Oliver Dowden has confirmed the Government has backed down from another fight with Mr Johnson. He said any such punishment would be “disproportionate”.

The day after leaving Parliament in a strop Mr Johnson started his column, with his contract worth a reported £1million. His first offering saw the ex-PM tell a long-winded story about an unnamed Cabinet member who “miraculous changed his appearance” by losing weight.
