Pretty town is one of UK’s most expensive but locals insist ‘we’re not snobs’

Despite the village’s reputation, locals insist they’re not “snobby” (Image: Google Maps) Known as ‘a jewel in Somerset’s crown’, this quaint little village is one of the UK’s most expensive – but locals insist they’re not “snobby” – despite the area’s reputation. Wedmore, located just down the road from the famous Cheddar Gorge and a bit north-west of Glastonbury , boasts a number of lovely independent shops, restaurants and pubs, despite its low population of just a little more than 3,000.  One such restaurant is found inside The Swan hotel, whose head chef Tom Blake previously contributed heavily to Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall’s River Cottage TV show – but it’s not cheap, SomersetLive reports . A crab on toast starter will set you back £12, while its rump steak and chips costs over double that, at £27. Those with a sweet tooth can splash out £10 on an apricot muffin with apricot and rosemary ketchup and goat’s cheese. The village was home to an England cricketing legend during his youth, as well as convicted paedophile Gary Glitter at the time of his arrest. One such review explained why: ‘Wonderful place, great atmosphere, food was amazing, highly recommended, friendly staff, best burger ever!!!’ The New Inn is also a cheaper option to The Swan, where its Wednesday Steak Nights will leave you just £18.50 down, coming with a side of chips and salad.  ‘Wedmore is one of the jewels in Somerset’s crown. It’s a very beautiful, historic village,’ were the words of chair of Wedmore Parish Council, Polly Costello. The average house price is over £500,000, according to Zoopla – detached houses had an average of £816,244 while terraced ones typically went for about £350,000.  Wedmore is also home to a beautiful church (Image: Getty) A key member of England’s cricket team grew up in Wedmore (Image: Getty) ‘There’s some jealousy from other areas that look at us and think Wedmore is full of posh, snobby people. That’s not true at all – there’s a really diverse bunch of people here.’ Among that diverse bunch is England white ball cricket captain Jos Buttler, who is leading the team to the One Day International World Cup being held in India in October. Buttler attended the prestigious King’s College School in Taunton, where parents currently spend £13,785 per term for their children to board.  Another resident which Wedmore is less proud of is Gary Glitter – the convicted paedophile and former glam rock singer, who was recalled to prison earlier this year due to breaching his license conditions, owned a property in Wedmore at the time of his original arrest.
