Huge change for takeaways with host of everyday fast food items to disappear in days

Takeaways will no longer be able to serve food with certain items including plastic cutlery and polystyrene cups – it comes as ministers hopes the move will help better protect the environment

Takeaways will be forced to scrap plastic cutlery, plates and trays as the items will be banned in a matter of days.

Fast- food bosses will be stopped from serving items on single-use plastic materials including bowls from October 1. However, there are some exceptions to the ban depending on whether the item is already packaged or is being supplied to another business.

Under the new rules, diners will no longer be able to use polystyrene cups and containers. However, they can still be served in the material if it needs ‘further preparation’ before it’s consumed such as toasting or adding water Lastly, single-use plastic cutlery or balloon sticks will be prohibited as part of the change.

Owners have been advised to use up their existing stock before the rule comes into effect or they could be at risk of being fined. The new rules extend to online, over-the-counter sales and the supply of items from new and existing stock.
