SIR Keir Starmer “shamelessly” tried to deceive the public over illegal migration measures, it is claimed.
Ministers last night blasted the Labour leader for flip-flopping when he ruled out a returns scheme after hinting at a deal with the EU.
He had suggested the UK would accept migrants in exchange for sending back those who arrive illegally.
On Sky News, he said: “There is obviously an EU quota system for EU members. We will not be part of that. We are not an EU member.”
Sir Keir – who is due to meet France’s President Emmanuel Macron this week – added: “This is why what the Government’s saying, it’s been complete garbage.”
