Sick sea lions washing up dead on beaches is ‘bad sign’ as Leptospirosis spreads

Sick sea lions are washing up dead on beaches in horrifying amounts as a concerning rise in a horrid bacterial disease among the beloved creatures is reported.

Leptospirosis is a highly contagious bacterial infection that affects marine mammals, pets and humans. The Northcoast Marine Mammal Center, a rescue organisation, said that over the past couple of weeks it had seen an influx of cases among sea lions.

Many of the sea creatures seemed listless and confused. While others were underweight and later found to be suffering from stomach ulcers. Many of them had their flippers tucked in underneath their abdomen. Giancarlo Rulli, a spokesperson for the Marine Mammal Center, said: “It’s because they are in a lot of pain.
