Djokovic ‘on cloud nine’ as Serb follows up US Open triumph with Davis Cup joy

Novak Djokovic has guided Serbia to the final eight of the Davis Cup, keeping his winning momentum after clinching the  US Open  on Sunday. Still undoubtedly fatigued following his outstanding run at Flushing Meadows, the 36-year-old made light work of Spaniard Alejandro Davidovich Fokina to help his homeland advance. French Open quarter-finalist Davidovich Fokina promised to provide a stern test for Djokovic, who only had a matter of days to refresh after clinching his 24th career Grand Slam title. However, it was plain sailing for the Serb, as he won 6-3 6-4 to complete a 2-0 victory over Spain on Friday. By coming out on top in Valencia, Serbia have booked their spot in the final eight of the Davis Cup in Malaga this November. “I’m on cloud nine, as you can say, with everything that has been happening lately on the tennis court,” Djokovic explained after the match. It’s a huge responsibility and pressure, but also an incredible privilege and honour.
