A teacher’s torso was found in a lake after going on an evening stroll as a suspect appeared in court charged with murder.
Mariame Sylla, 59, was allegedly dismembered by Harold Landon III, 33, after she had taken a walk on July 29. Police discovered her torso in a pond just days later with remains also discovered in an apartment block in Clinton, Maryland.
It took authorities almost a month to identify her remains, with Landon later identified as a suspect after detectives examined security video from the scene that showed a pickup truck going to and from the area where her body was found.
Police have not determined a motive for the killing, but said that Landon and Sylla lived in the same neighbourhood and were strangers to each other. Landon was already in custody for allegedly violating an order of protection against his ex-girlfriend by the time Prince George’s County Police in Maryland identified him as a suspect in Sylla’s death.
