‘We’ll keep building our diesel offroaders despite net zero ban’

Interview: Ineos chief on why the combustion engine has a future beyond 2030

Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s carmaker Ineos Automotive will continue making petrol and diesel-burning motors into the next decade despite the global drive to net zero, new chief Lynn Calder has said.

The maker of the Grenadier offroader said betting solely on batteries would not be feasible and argued that fossil fuel engines would still have a place in the world for years to come.

Ms Calder said: “I think for the future, even beyond 2030, the combustion engine for the Grenadier is still going to be a strong powertrain option.”

The executive, who has run Ineos’ nascent car business since last year, said electric vehicles were “a really important part of the mix” but there was a danger in betting only on one technology.
