Missing a flight because you arrived late is annoying. But it doesn’t quite compare to missing a flight because it left earlier than it’s scheduled departure time, which happened to Michigan resident Tom and his sons – who ended up paying $3,000 for new tickets
A Michigan family who were told that their flight home was delayed were forced to pay $3,000 for new tickets – after their initial flight actually ended up leaving early.
Tom and his two sons checked into Guatemala City airport three hours before the first leg of their return journey to Detroit. When they were informed via a text from Spirit Airlines that the flight was delayed by 20 minutes and then another 15, their new flight departure time was 4:18pm.
Feeling relaxed and with plenty of time, Tom and the kids went for a bite to eat, and continued checking for any flight updates. They returned to the gate at 3:40pm, ready to get on their delayed flight. But they weren’t quite expecting what they were then told.
“We were told the plane had been readied earlier than expected and the doors had closed,” Tom explained. “The gate staff said it would be three days before another flight was available, and they refused to book us on another airline.”
