Pre-season preparations are different for every team. Eddie Howe made headlines last year after sending his Newcastle squad on a bizarre sheep-herding team bonding session following a pre-season friendly against non-league outfit Bath City. Meanwhile, Arsenal players were pictured riding roller coasters at Universal Studios in Orlando. Others simply stick to tactical meetings and training sessions. But for Liverpool, their summer included a helping hand from one of the greatest triathletes of all time the former chief executive of a global advertising agency. Jan Frodeno, an Olympic gold medallist in Beijing and a three-time winner of the Ironman World Championship, addressed Jurgen Klopp’s men at the Hotel Oschberghof in the town of Donaueschingen, Germany. Frodeno was invited to speak about his glistening career and the mental fortitude it took for him to remain at the top of his sport for so long. Later this summer, Liverpool were given a talk by another guest speaker, British businessman Kevin Roberts, previously the long-serving CEO of advertising agency Saatchi & Saatchi, who is now heading up marketing and leadership consultancy Red Rose Consulting. A similar workshop was held at the at the Kirkby Training Centre where Roberts explored how they could create the best possible environment and ensure all of the members of the squad feel equally valued by their backroom staff.
