Wearing socks to bed is like sleeping in a toilet

There can be many health benefits to sleeping with socks on, but it’s important to make sure they’re clean ones – as dirty socks can hold the same bacteria found on cockroaches

To some people, the thought of wearing socks to bed is a horrifying concept, but for others, it helps to drift off into a comforting slumber. If you love the idea of slipping into bed in your favourite pyjamas and socks on – we have some bad news for you.

Sleep experts have revealed that a pair of worn socks hold onto the same amount of bacteria as a doormat – and also hold onto the same bacteria found in a toilet and in cockroaches faeces. So wearing them to bed invites a whole load of lovely bacteria – which can cause a wide range of infections too.

There are benefits to wearing socks to bed – such as increased blood flow, helping your sex life, falling asleep quicker and also being asleep for longer. But it’s important that you put on a clean pair of socks before tucking yourself into bed, according to sleep pros as at MattressNextDay.

In a bid to highlight the gross reality of going to bed in worn socks, they swabbed socks that had been worn from 7 am until 11 pm, to see what scary bacteria could be found on them. Each person wore the same socks for their normal routine and when they sent the socks off to be swabbed, they found some disgusting results. They found that half of the socks had the same bacteria called Pseudomonas aeruginosa, which can cause a wide range of infections, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa is often found on cockroaches and in their faecal droppings.
