Andrew Flintoff’s close pal shares new details of Top Gear car crash after ‘covering up face’

Andrew Flintoff left fans shocked on Friday after he joined up with the England coaching staff for the first ODI international with New Zealand at Sofia Gardens

Andrew Flintoff’s face was still covered up as recently as six weeks ago as he continues to recover from his high-speed car crash last December.

Flintoff, 45, was filming for Top Gear at Dunsfold Park Aerodrome in Surrey when he had to be airlifted to hospital with severe facial injuries. The former all-rounder also broke ribs in the incident, and has since left the BBC show whilst an enquiry into what transpired continues.

But on Friday, the star surprised fans at Sofia Gardens when he attended the England v New Zealand ODI clash, having joined up with Matthew Mott’s coaching staff. Whilst ‘Freddie’ appeared in good spirits, the markings on his face were clearly evident as he continues to recover.

And now close friend Steve Harmison has revealed that the game represented the first time Flintoff had appeared in public without his injuries being masked. The pair were long-time England teammates, and both played their last Test match together in the 2009 win over Australia at The Oval that sealed the Ashes.
