America’s most outspoken fashion critic reveals his style hits and misses of summer 2023

Most of the 500,000 people who follow Derek Guy on X (formerly Twitter) have no idea who he is. We know that Derek Guy is his real name, he is Asian-American and lives in northern California, where he works as a fashion journalist. Beyond that, biographical information is scant. He would even prefer not to say his age, although I would guess he was around 40.

“I’ve always been a private guy,” he explains over the telephone on a call during which the only hint of his domestic life is the sound of a cat screeching in the background. This isn’t to say he is not courteous and entertaining; he would just rather keep himself to himself. In an era of constant disclosure, it is a refreshing attitude.

When it comes to men’s clothing, on the other hand, he could hardly be more outspoken. Over the past year, Guy has emerged as perhaps the world’s most famous men’s fashion critic, with detailed and forthright opinions on everything from cuff length, sole welting, collar gaps, lapels, trouser height, denim, fast-fashion, buttoning points and other aspects of clothes you never knew you cared about. To many, he is known simply as “the menswear guy”, a fount of surprisingly relatable wisdom that eschews the brand-driven fashion journalism.

King of Spain at the final day of Wimbledon. This looks great. Very rare to see this level of tailoring nowadays, even on the wealthy. So let’s talk about some of the reasons why it’s great.
