John Reynolds was Sinead’s first husband and they were together from the late 1980s until their divorce in 1991 – but they remained very close up until her shock death earlier this year
Sinead O’Connor’s ex-husband has reflected on the close friendship he had with the late singer, even after they divorced, and says she was the funniest person he knew.
Music producer John Reynolds was married to Sinead – who passed away aged 56 in July – from 1989 until 1991 and together they share a son named Jake, who they welcomed in 1987. Although John and Sinead split and divorced in 1991, they remained close friends and he was left devastated by the news of her death this summer.
Reflecting on Sinead’s life, John says that she was heroic in her approach to discussing mental health and raising awareness of abuse within the Catholic Church – including the moment she tore up a photo of the Pope during a TV appearance in 1992, a move which sparked considerable controversy. John says he recalls Sinead’s sense of humour above all else.
He told a special edition of Hot Press magazine paying tribute to the singer and activist: “I think it’s important to remember – amid all the seriousness, the confrontations, and the political stances she took â she was also a really, really funny person who had a great sense of humour.
