Gareth Southgate reflects on England “turning point” ahead of facing old foes Scotland

Gareth Southgate’s England will take on Scotland at Hampden Park on Tuesday in a special anniversary clash to mark 150 years of football rivalry between the two nations

Gareth Southgate has always seen Scotland games as a “reference” point.

‌Southgate played in the Euro 96 thriller at Wembley and the torturous two-legged 1999 play-off when England won 2-0 at Hampden Park and then lost 1-0 at Wembley. England boss Southgate has also been in charge for some pretty tense affairs against England’s oldest football rival, most notably when Harry Kane’s injury time leveller salvaged a 2-2 draw in June 2017.

‌Southgate is in a much more comfortable position now than six years ago but defeat to Scotland would certainly change the mood. It was by no means a bad result against Ukraine on Saturday but Southgate also knows defeat to Scotland would suddenly put him back under the spotlight.

‌Southgate said: “I don’t really look back too much, I don’t really look back too much at my playing career, at my managerial career, there are moments where you have references of certain games, things that happen, and things you have learned from those experiences.
