The posh California university Rishi Sunak handed £3 million to boasted about “pouring concrete” for a new science centre – weeks before crumbling UK schools had to close.
Mr Sunak and his wife Akshata Murthy handed pots of cash to Claremont McKenna College, the liberal arts college in Los Angeles where Mrs Murthy studied. Mrs Murthy, a member of the College’s Board of Trustees, also sits on its Campus Planning and Facilities Committee and its Finance and Operations Committee. Her committees sign off the campus plan and “advocates for new structures”.
A Labour Party spokesperson said: “It’s one rule for Rishi Sunak’s super-rich college, and another for the kids of Britain. He’s out of touch and he’s lost control.”
The couple’s donations paid for the hi-tech Murthy-Sunak Quantative and Computing Lab, kitted out with £650 luxury chairs and a super computer. And in July, Claremont McKenna boasted that it had “moved one step closer to its vision of a state-of-the-art” sciences centre, as “concrete wasâ¦poured for the foundation”.
