Gareth Southgate has Mr Reliable to thank for sparing England’s blushes against Ukraine

England could only manage a 1-1 draw with Ukraine but a first international goal from Kyle Walker ensured that the Three Lions didn’t suffer further humiliation in Saturday’s Euro 2024 qualifier

Kyle Walker has waited longer than anyone for his first England goal – and it arrived in the nick of time last night.

The Manchester City defender got off the mark in his 77th appearance for his country to rescue a crucial Euro qualifying point and keep Gareth Southgate’s team in control of their own destiny. No outfield England player has played more games without finding the back of the net.

‌So it was no surprise that the full-back didn’t appear to know how to celebrate. For 15 first-half minutes, Ukraine had dreamed of giving their war-torn nation a stirring victory after Arsenal’s Oleksandr Zinchenko fired them ahead.

‌But Walker’s assured finish from Harry Kane’s laser-like pass maintained England’s unbeaten run and kept the Three Lions top of Group C with a tantalising clash with Italy at Wembley in November. England dominated for long spells – and Bukayo Saka had a spectacular long-range effort brilliantly tipped onto the crossbar by Ukraine keeper Heorhiy Bushchan.
