In the Sixties Volvo launched the 1800S, a car so dependable that a retired New York teacher called Irv Gordon clocked up three million miles and set a world record for the highest mileage driven by an owner. In the Seventies Volvo invented the blocky estates beloved of Margo and Jerry in The Good Life. Then came the family-friendly SUVs such as the XC90 (Jeremy Clarkson has owned four). Running through all these models like a stick of rock were three core principles that are probably carved on a stone tablet in the company’s Gothenburg offices.
