The statistics are eye-opening. More than two million people in the UK have significant sight loss – meaning they can’t see well enough to drive. That number is due to double by 2050, says the Royal National Institute for Blind People, as the population gets older and cataracts, glaucoma and other age-related eye conditions become more common.
Meanwhile, more than 645,000 people are on a waiting list for a cataract or other eye operation, to see a consultant for the first time or to start courses of sight-saving jabs and other treatments. The delays could lead to a “tidal wave” of avoidable blindness, warned a report from Specsavers on the state of the nation’s eye health last year.
