It faced trumped up allegations of terrorism amid a brutal crackdown from the Kremlin after Putin's invasion of Ukraine . In that same year, the organisation won a Nobel Peace Prize for their heroic efforts to support Russian political prisoners. Sergei, who now lives in Vilnius in Lithuania after fleeing the country when Putin invaded Ukraine , estimates there are currently more than 500 political prisoners in Russia. That's more than three times the figure of 183 just five years ago in 2018. Speaking to The Sun for our new documentary Foreign Agents, he said: "It's getting worse. We should worry about it. "Now they declare that it is a crime to have an opinion different to the state about the war. It's much more dangerous now, and much easier to become a political prisoner. "After the war started, our last remaining freedoms were destroyed." People who are detained in Russia faced the prospect of trumped up charges, kangaroo courts and even horrific torture at the hands of the security services.
