BBC viewers fume ‘our licence fee is paying’ as fans slam rugby coverage

BBC Breakfast sparked a backlash from viewers on Sunday, with many slamming Mike Bushell’s coverage of the Rugby World Cup. Many felt the programme was dominated by the sports coverage, instead of focussing on its news headlines. Mike appeared via video link in Marseille as he spoke with his co-hosts Ben Boulous and Victoria Valentine, who were back in the studio. As he wrapped up the segment, Mike said: “That’s just about it for now from Marseille, where you can see it is a hive of activity. “The fish market is bustling this morning, people getting their meals ready for later on. I can smell it, it smells absolutely gorgeous. Just look out there, the Mediterranean… perfect place for Scotland fans to get ready for their huge match later on today.” During the programme, fans took to Twitter in droves to complain about the show’s rugby coverage. @Itt39354118 shared: “This sport is going on a bit #bbcbreakfast.” BBC Breakfast: Mike spoke with Victoria and Ben who were in the studio (Image: BBC ) @jon_abbott complained: “Would it be that hard to find a French-speaking sports reporter to cover #RWC2023?” @simongalcock added: “Bushell chatting rugby with a Frenchman who can’t speak a word of English. Wtaf? Our licence fee is paying for his 8-week jolly up.” (sic) @andy140282 asked: “Are Wales not in the rugby World Cup just talking about England and Scotland.” “OMG! there must be more to the sport segment than Rugby & Football! I so hate both,” @Darryl00219939 fumed. @Plantagenet2 tweeted: “Mike Bushell on a nice BBC freebie in Marseilles to cover #RugbyWorldCup.” As @DanHarvey74 went on to say: “Mike Bushell’s trying too hard to push this rugby agenda…” Despite the criticism of the sports coverage, fans were thrilled to see host Victoria Valentine back on the sofa, with @hammer_hank tweeting: “Good morning Victoria. Absolutely brilliant to see you presenting.” BBC Breakfast airs daily at 6am on BBC One.
