Wife spotted unknown symptoms of early-onset dementia in her 44-year-old husband

Caroline first started seeing a number of strange changes in husband Mark’s personality from a loss in his usual attentiveness to a reliance in binge eating biscuits

A concerned wife spotted symptoms of her 44-year-old husband’s early onset dementia without quite knowing what she had seen.

Caroline Preston saw changes in her husband Mark and had to push doctors to keep testing until they got an official diagnosis of the horrific brain-destroying disease. Dementia is described as young or early onset when symptoms develop before the age of 65.

The disease is mostly associated with old age and therefore is often not recognised when younger people develop it. It can instead be attributed to other causes including depression, stress, menopause, physical health problems and relationship issues. On average this leads to a four year delay to getting an accurate diagnosis.

As the person who spent the most time with him, it was Caroline who first spotted something was wrong. One example was when they talked about baby names for their first child.
