Sussex mum Tania MacNabb is warning other gap year travellers to be safe after her son and his friend went missing on a beach in Australia three months into their travels
A mother whose son went missing after he jetted off to Australia for a gap year has admitted she’ll never know exactly what happened to him.
Hugo Palmer, 20, and his friend Erwan Ferrieux, mysteriously vanished while travelling around the country with their friends. The trip ended in tragedy for the pair, and their concerned family at home, after they vanished three months into the adventure and have never returned.
Hugo’s mum Tania MacNabb has revealed nobody will ever know what happened to the pair after they went missing and their belongings were found on a beach in New South Wales. It led to police in the area thinking the pair had been dragged underwater somehow by riptides which are common knowledge to the locals, but not tourists, the Sun reports.
The Brit’s body was never recovered, meaning Tania and the family weren’t able to hold a funeral in his memory. However, a single bone which was later discovered was found to have been gnawed by a shark – prompting fears the young man was eaten by one. Aussie cops confirmed they believe Hugo was dead before being eaten, but questions still remained from his family about how he got into the situation.
