Woman accused of leaving her blind old dog on side of major road before driving off

The elderly, visually impaired dog was found wandering along the side of the I-10 in Benson, Arizona, and was picked up by the local sheriff and his wife after the pup was dumped by his owner

A woman has been arrested after her elderly blind dog was found walking along the side of a busy highway.

62-year-old Karen Black, of Phoenix, Arizona, was arrested on Wednesday, September 6, and charged with cruelty to animals. The charge came after the Cochise County Sheriff’s Office found her elderly pup walking along an exit ramp in Benson, Arizona, around 45 miles southeast of Tucson.

Cochise County Sheriff Mark Dannels and his wife spotted the tiny pooch wandering along the exit ramp connecting I-10 and Skyline Road at around 11.30am on August 26. In a statement about the incident on Facebook, the Cochise County Sheriff’s Office said: “Sheriff Dannels and his wife, Nicki secured the shaken dog in their vehicle.”

The unnamed elderly pup with a vision impairment was picked up by a Cochise County Sheriff’s Office Animal Control Officer who discovered the dog did have a microchip. The last registered owner was said to be in Maricopa County, and numerous calls and messages were left by Animal Control, with no response.
