The lessons from Devon Conway and Daryl Mitchell were simple, definitive and utterly chastening for England. The two New Zealand batsmen played the innings that no England player could, putting on a stunningly emphatic unbeaten partnership of 180 to usher their side to the simplest of victories, with 26 balls remaining.

Both were playing their first one-day internationals against England, and the left-handed Conway, all timing and composure, made 111 while the more aggressive right-handed Mitchell smashed 118, with seven sixes.

England could only manage four half-centuries from Dawid Malan, Ben Stokes, Jos Buttler and Liam Livingstone, but at the halfway stage their total of 291 for six had actually looked above par on a pitch very much like those that will be encountered in
