The last time I was in Haltemprice Leisure Centre in the western suburbs of Hull, I was 18 years old. It was the summer of 1982 and I was there for the sunbeds, which were a new thing back then, the technology perhaps not quite yet perfected. In any event, I went orange and got a weeping radiation sore on my cheek. On Sunday morning of the last bank holiday weekend, I made my return to Haltemprice. Not to the sunbed, but the swimming pool. Once it had opened with great fanfare in 1974, I had spent a fair bit of my childhood in that pool. Now I was back. My daughter Rachel, 24, came too.
