There’s a frequently asked question on the website of Tom Kerridge’s two-Michelin-starred pub in Marlow, Buckinghamshire: “Does Tom Kerridge work at the Hand & Flowers?” The official answer is not always, due to his busy schedule. But if he is in there tasting a sauce or wielding a cleaver, you’re welcome to pop into the kitchen and say hello.

I arrive at the pub just before a Friday lunch service. Lots of staff in whites with the hallmark pirate and chef-hat logo come and go, but I don’t see him.
