Man accused of raping university student ‘posed as bystander after assault’

The man accused of raping a University of Wisconsin at Madison student allegedly beat her, breaking her jaw, in what police have called a “horrific” attack which left the young woman clinging to life

A 26-year-old man accused of raping and beating a university student then posed as an innocent bystander after the attack, according to police.

Brandon Thompson was arrested on Wednesday, September 6, and charged with sexual assault, reckless injury and strangulation. Police labelled the attack on a University of Wisconsin at Madison student “horrific” and said it left the young woman clinging to life.

“This case will not be complete until this cowardly attacker receives the justice he deserves”, said Chief Shon Barnes at a press conference. Thompson’s arrest came three days after he launched his attack on the student as she walked through the commercial district of the college town at around 3.30am on Sunday, September 3.

He allegedly broke the woman’s jaw, leaving her with “life-threatening injuries” in a vicious attack which police called a “top priority” for their department. Thompson also allegedly hung around the scene of the crime after his brutal attack.
