A new study has revealed that many areas in this Central American country could easily be described as war zones with some of the highest murder rates on the planet
With nine of the most dangerous cities in the top 10, visitors to Mexico should be very careful where they decide to tread.
According to recent data from World of Statistics, the western Mexico municipality of Colima is the murder capital of the world with 181.9 homicides per 100,000 inhabitants. The city, bearing the same name as the state, placed first in 2021 with 196.6 murders per 100,000 inhabitants.
The municipality of Zamora, in the western state of Michoacán, came in second, with 177.7 homicides per 100,000 inhabitants while Ciudad Obregón, the second-largest city in the north-western state of Sonora, was third with 138.2 murders per 100,000 inhabitants. In fourth, with an average of 134.6 homicides per 100,000 inhabitants, was Zacatecas, the capital and largest city of north-central state Zacatecas
And across from California, ranked fifth with 105.1 murders per 100,000 inhabitants, was the Mexican Pacific border city of Tijuana. The cities in the central state of Guanajuato, Celaya and Uruapan, placed sixth and seventh respectively. Celaya registered 99.6 homicides per 100,000 inhabitants and Uruapan followed with 78.3 murders per 100,000 inhabitants.
