Jorge Vilda sacked as Spain coach after Luis Rubiales controversy

Spain women’s World Cup-winning coach Jorge Vilda has been sacked as part of the fallout of the scandal involving the Spanish FA (RFEF) president Luis Rubiales kissing the player Jenni Hermoso on the lips.

The new RFEF board, formed after Rubiales was provisionally suspended by Fifa, has agreed to terminate Vilda’s contract.

Vilda was a close ally of Rubiales and was seen applauding him at an RFEF meeting where he refused to resign, though he later tried to distance himself from the association president.

Vilda had been under scrutiny since last year when, in September, 15 Spain players boycotted the national team, citing a toxic culture. Eleven of those players eventually made themselves available for the World Cup after talks with the federation, but four
