Tories put forward fly-tipper who dumped burnt-out bin as by-election candidate

The Lib Dems said ‘local residents deserve better than this’, adding that the Conservatives should know better than to put forward a known fly-tipper forward as a candidate

The Tories have put forward a fly-tipper who had to pay a fine of hundreds of pounds for dumping rubbish as a candidate for an upcoming by-election. John Fareham was issued with a £400 fixed penalty notice after reportedly leaving a burnt-out compost bin and damaged electrical items in his local area.

Officers from the council’s environmental enforcement section investigated a complaint and identified the politician as the fly-tipper. It resulted in the former Conservative councillor being slapped with a fine in May 2021, which he was understood to have paid at the time.

The Hull City Council by-election, which will be held on September 21, was triggered after a councillor was disqualified for failing to attend meetings while ill. Labour’s Sarah Harper-Riches, who said her absence was due to chronic fatigue and becoming a new mum, said at the time she was “devastated” and “baffled” to be removed from her seat. She had replaced Mr Fareham, who was Hull’s only Tory councillor, in last year’s local elections. He will now be seeking to steal the seat back.

The City Council, which is currently held by the Lib Dems, launched a programme to help improve the appearance of neighbourhoods across Hull, including plans to clear up fly-tipped rubbish in March. The Hull Liberal Democrats said: “Frankly, the Conservatives should know better, and local residents deserve better than this. In Hull, the Conservatives reached an all time low at the last elections and have no Councillors left in the city. It’s clear people around here want to send a message to the Government at every opportunity they have. The Conservatives just take voters for granted.”
