England vs New Zealand: Jonny Bairstow fireworks in vain

Series drawn at 2-2 then, as New Zealand strolled to a comfortable victory at Trent Bridge in a fourth match that was conspicuously one-sided thanks to some explosive batting from Tim Seifert, Glenn Phillips and Mark Chapman, whose combined efforts exposed England’s inability to aid Jonny Bairstow’s muscular 73 that underpinned their total of 175 for eight.

England’s bowlers were taken apart, with the exception of 19-year-old leg spinner Rehan Ahmed, who showed excellence in taking two for 27 from his four overs. That was not matched by his spinning colleagues, while New Zealand’s spinners were superb again, with Mitchell Santner, Ish Sodhi and and Rachin Ravindra sharing six wickets.
