Scottish football fans travelling by bus could be banned from stopping at pubs unless alcohol is being consumed with “a substantial meal” and must leave grounds 30 minutes after a game.
The proposed guidelines for “taking passengers to sporting events in Scotland” was published as part of a consultation by Richard Turfitt, the UK government’s senior traffic commissioner.
The report said that while the vast majority of fans did not cause trouble “a small minority can be disruptive and impact the enjoyment of others”.
The guidelines have been criticised as “targeted” and “heavy-handed”.
Under the proposals private hire buses will be banned from stopping at pubs unless alcohol is being consumed with “a substantial meal”, and the bus operator must seek prior agreement from a “dedicated football officer” for meal stops where alcohol is available.
