Coco Gauff ended Caroline Wozniacki’s bid for a fairytale in New York with a hard-fought US Open fourth-round victory that edged her another step closer to a first grand-slam title.
The 19-year-old American looked deeply unsettled at a break down in the deciding set but quickly recovered her composure to reel off six straight games for a 6-3, 3-6, 6-1 victory in an entertaining two-hour battle.
Wozniacki, 33, has impressed in only her third tournament since returning to the tour as a mother-of-two last month. The former world No 1 from Denmark has not lost the athleticism which defined the first phase of her career before retirement in 2020 but she ultimately lacked the weapons to get the better of Gauff yesterday.
