Dundee spins away from rivals as university start-ups graduate

Smaller universities are punching above their weight when it comes to spinout success, according to a report that names the University of Dundee as Britain’s most successful university for start-up exits.

In the Entrepreneurial Impact report compiled by Octopus Ventures, six of the top ten in the venture capital company’s rankings lie outside the “golden triangle” of Oxford, Cambridge and London. Non-Russell Group universities such as Edinburgh Napier University, the University of Strathclyde and the University of Salford also feature prominently.

Exscientia, a Dundee spinout that uses artificial intelligence to reduce the time it takes to develop medicines, became one of Britain’s largest university exits when it went public in New York in 2021, securing a £2.2 billion valuation.
