Dozens of towns and cities in the north of England and Scotland face a reduction in rail services once HS2 is complete, according to new analysis.
Rail experts believe that line-capacity issues in Crewe – where HS2 will meet the existing West Coast Main Line – will result in scores of existing intercity services being axed to make way for the new high-speed trains.
The research for the new Midland and Northern Transport Group, which comprises MPs representing red wall and rural constituencies, found that stopping-services will be significantly reduced once HS2 Phase 2a – from the West Midlands to Crewe – opens. It has been delayed until between 2035 and 2041.
