Teachers march in protest after pressure from parents led to deaths

Educators in South Korea are demanding more rights at work as they grieve the loss of colleagues

Some 200,000 South Korean teachers took to the streets in protest at the weekend, demanding more rights and calling another mass rally on Monday to commemorate a young teacher who died while under heavy pressure at work.

Dressed in black, the teachers gathered near the National Assembly in the capital Seoul on Saturday, asking for better protection against pushy parents and a revision of a vague clause in the Child Welfare Act that can hold teachers accountable for child abuse for what they consider to be necessary disciplinary action.

Tens of thousands were expected to continue protesting on Monday to pay tribute to a 23-year-old teacher who died by suicide in her classroom in July.

Diary entries, work logs and text messages unearthed by her cousin revealed that in the months leading up to her death, she had been bombarded by complaints from parents, reported the BBC.
