 Rescuers had to make a devastating decision after being called out to a baby dolphin stuck in some reeds in a UK river over the weekend. Medics from the British Divers Marine Life Rescue (BDMLR) rushed to the edge of the New Bedford River near Pymoor, in Cambridgeshire, on Saturday to find a common dolphin trapped in the reeds. The rescue team tried to save the young dolphin but had to make the decision to euthanise it on welfare grounds after trying to release it and assessing that it was unable to look after itself. The decision was made because the baby dolphin was still maternally dependent and had lost its mum. According to a statement shared on Facebook by the BDMLR on Sunday, the baby dolphin was believed to be one of a pair that were spotted as far inland as Bluntisham, a rural village in Cambridgeshire, around 45 miles inland from open water. When medics from the BDMLR arrived on the scene at the river, which runs off the River Great Ouse, they could immediately see that rescuing the dolphin would be really complicated, and called on Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue to support. In a statement, the BDMLR said: 'The dolphin had wedged itself deep into the reeds, which have thick hollow stems and can grow to five metres high, making the task of extracting the dolphin even more difficult.
