The three hat-tricks scored in the top flight on Saturday were the joint most on one day since six were recorded on Boxing Day 1963. Tottenham Hotspur’s Son Heung-min, Manchester City’s Erling Haaland and Brighton & Hove Albion’s Evan Ferguson became the 13th trio to hit a treble on the same day since that famous set of matches in 60 years ago, when a top-flight record of 66 goals were scored.
That day was also the last before Saturday where three non-English players hit hat-tricks on the same day: the Scottish pair of Burnley’s Andy Lochhead and Ipswich Town’s Graham Leggat were among the six hat-trick scorers, as was the Blackburn Rovers and Republic of Ireland forward Andy McEvoy.
