After a summer of fun, some kids might not be too excited about the prospect of returning to school – but there are things parents can do to help ease them back into a routine
Children in the UK usually have a six week summer holiday before returning to school sometime in August or September – and after the excitement of the break, it can be hard to get back into a routine. After a summer of fun, kids might be a little restless and find it hard to focus.
But there are things parents can do to make sure the post-summer blues don’t hit them as hard. In general, parents should focus on the positives about returning to their own routine, rather than the negatives of leaving summer behind.
According to Freya Knibb, Marketing Manager at Oakwood Theme Park, you should make sure you’re avoiding any negative phrasing surrounding summer ending, and instead give them something to look forward to when autumn starts. Avoid phrases like: “It’s so sad summer is done already”, and instead say something like: “It’s exciting that school is starting, it means it’s closer to our half term holiday”.
Freya said: “Instead of being down about summer ending, they’ll be excited about autumn starting. Make plans with them in the evenings and weekends like making food together, visiting parks to see the changing leaves and ask them what they want to do for autumn half term so they have something to be excited for when school finishes.”
