Iceland will be getting rid of several stores this month

Iceland will get rid of several stores this month – including one shutting its doors today (Image: Getty) Popular supermarket Iceland , which mainly sells frozen foods, has been hit by store closures in recent months. Iceland has closed 13 sites already this year, with a further three stores closing this month. Customers will be saying goodbye to one site today, with the Iceland at Llanelli, Wales shutting for good at 5pm on Saturday, September 2.  While shoppers may be disappointed by closures across the UK, the supermarket chain does regularly open new stores. The executive chairman of Iceland Foods, Richard Walker, told Express.co.uk that “a small number of store closures happen every year,” and that can also be because some “shop leases expire”. Iceland opened The Food Warehouse in Kendal, Cumbria, earlier this year.  The Food Warehouse, which launched in 2014, is part of Iceland Foods and has 150 sites already. The Food Warehouse provides bigger pack options so customers can stock up on their favourite goods, “offering customers and local businesses a simpler way to shop for great value and great quality products”. Express.co.uk has contacted Iceland regarding the closures and how they will affect both employees and customers. Express.co.uk has also asked for a list of upcoming new stores.
