It said: "Who qualifies for a social tariff? All the main ones are for anyone on Universal Credit." The article revealed how one reader managed to save over £300 a year on their broadband bill by switching to one of the tariffs. The reader, who is disabled and on personal independence payments (PIP), had been quoted £40 a month for a new deal with their existing provider. But they realised they were eligible for a social tariff after reading about them on the MSE website. After having a look online, they found one for £12 with Vodafone, saving them £28 a month and £336 a year on their broadband. Who is eligible and how do you apply? Social tariffs are specifically designed for low income households and those on benefits. There are broadband social tariffs, but also phone social tariffs on the market too. Some providers refer to them as "essential" or "basic" packages. They are delivered in the same way as a normal broadband or phone deal, the only difference being they are cheaper. If anyone in your household is on Universal Credit you will be able to claim a social tariff, according to the regulator Ofcom. But a number of major providers let those on other benefits sign up, including those on personal independence payments (PIP) and Attendance Allowance.
