Defiant Sturgeon casts long shadow over SNP

As thousands marched down Edinburgh’s Royal Mile in support of an independent Scotland in the European Union, one notable face was missing.

Nicola Sturgeon avoided the rally and speeches by Humza Yousaf, her successor as leader of the SNP, as well as junior ministers and other members of the movement’s new establishment. But failing to make the journey from her home in Glasgow is consistent with a summer that has seen her keep her distance from the party she led just five months ago.
