Chelsea have announced the signing of Cole Palmer from Manchester City in a deal worth £40million, with a further £2.4m add-ons included in the deal. Mauricio Pochettino made it his mission to sign a versatile forward in the latter stages of the window, and his persistence has been rewarded with the acquisition of the England Under-21 international. The winger has penned a seven-year contract at Stamford Bridge, with the club having the option to extend the deal by a further year. Palmer was widely regarded as one of the most exiting young talents to emerge from the City academy over the past few years, and Chelsea will be hoping that he reaches his potential in London. The 21-year-old can play as a right-winger but has also been deployed as a No 10 previously, and his versatility was a very attractive attribute for Chelsea when scouring the market for reinforcements. Speaking after his arrival, Palmer said: ‘I’m excited to get started and it feels great to sign. I’ve joined Chelsea because the project here sounds good and because of the platform I will have to try to showcase my talents. It is a young and hungry squad and, hopefully, we can do something special here.’ Chelsea have signed Cole Palmer (Image: Getty) Chelsea’s co-sporting directors Laurence Stewart and Paul Winstanley are both overjoyed by the deadline day signing too, releasing a joint-quote which read: ‘Cole arrives with experience of winning the Premier League and Champions League and adds further quality and versatility to our attacking unit ‘He has showcased his talent and potential in the most challenging environments and delivered on the international stage for England this summer at the European Under-21 Championships. He is undoubtedly ready for this next step and we are delighted it will be with Chelsea.’ We’ll be bringing you the very latest updates, pictures and video on this breaking news story.
